I lived on a street in London where the trees wept palette-sized leaves. A gentleman with a cart swept these suicides into a hooded dustpan every afternoon, burying them in trash bag shrouds, veins and all. I am still a poor painter, but I'm learning how to tease a brush around two curves of a breathing body: the bed of one heavily-lidded eye, and the bow between the lips that makes them look pursed in prayer.
